God has a beautiful and wonderful design and plan for your life. He has a plan and a purpose that will bring you in to the joy of your Lord. So use your God-given talents for the kingdom, because you are more than just mom!

As she watched the sun rise through the trees, she reflected on her life. She was about to turn 30, and lately she had been feeling like there was something missing. Something more she wanted to be doing. Not that she wanted to go back to work, because she didn’t. When the girls were born, she and Jack had decided that it would be best for them if she were a SAHM. And she loved it. But she has also loved using her gifts and talents each day at her job. She was passionate about helping others, and it brought her great joy. Was there a way that she could take those passions and use her God-given talents at home?

I am sure that we have all wondered this as SAHM’s. Can we be more than just “mom”? Should we? Are we taking away from our children if we do? It is normal to be a little apprehensive about making this decision. There are reasons why we should be using those gifts and talents at home though.

1. You Are Designed By God

There is so much more to us than just being “mom”. We were someone before our children were born.  We were someone with dreams and passions. We are someone more now, and we will have to be someone more when our children are grown. And look at the Proverbs 31 woman. She did amazing things throughout her life as a wife and mother!

No one knows your dreams and passions better than your heavenly Father. He created you with those exact things for a specific purpose. “We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus…” (Ephesians 2:10). Isn’t it beautiful to know that God created each one of us and that even the littlest detail was important to Him? He designed me just the way that I am, and you just the way that you are.

“For good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10). This means that before you were even formed, God had a prepared plan of good works that He wanted you to perform! These are things that matter and make a difference. We know that being a wife and mother is part of these works and so very important, but is that all we should be doing?

The answer to this will be different for each of us and here’s why.

2. You Have God-Given Abilities

After a quick search for “talent” in the concordance, I came across the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30. We know that Jesus was the man, and we are the servants. The talents represent your God-given talents and gifts that we each receive. The man gave to each servant talents according to their own ability. God gives us each a measure of gifts according to our own ability.

3. Your Abilities Are Given for a Purpose

The next verses talk about what each servant did with the talents given to him and how the man responded to their actions. The first two servants doubled their talents for their master and were rewarded. The third servant was fearful and hid his talent away. The man did not give him the talent for him to waste it, but to use it and bring abundance for the master.

When we step out in new directions it can be fearful. What if we fail? Our God-given talents should be used to bear fruit for the Kingdom. We are meant to use those gifts and talents and we will be held accountable if we don’t.

Peter also talks of gifts and talents, “as each one has received a gift minister it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (I Peter 4:10) These gifts are to be used to lead and encourage others in this life and their relationship with God.

4. There Are Blessings for Using Our Talents

There is good news when we are faithful instead of fearful. The Lord promises bountiful blessings! “Well done good and faithful servant. You were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter in to the joy of your lord.” (Matthew 25:23). What a joy it will be to hear these words when we stand before Jesus! And what joy we will receive as we work for God with the gifts that He has given. His perfect plan for us brings peace, joy, and fulfillment.

Sometimes as moms, we set our gifts aside in the place of being a parent, and feel like we can’t do both. But Romans 12:6 says, “having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…”

Let us use them!

I suggest you spend time with God and pray about how you can use those God-given gifts as a SAHM. Share with mentors or your spouse about where your talents can best be used. If you start to feel the pull to use your God-given talents from home, go for it!

God did not create you to only be a mom. He has a beautiful and wonderful design and plan for your life. Use your God-given talents for the kingdom, and when you stand before the Father you will hear, “well done good and faithful servant…enter in to the joy of your Lord.”
